HAPPY LEON DAY!

Jun 26, 2020 | Energy Efficiency for Business

It’s June 2020. And around here, believe it or not, there is a lot of talk about Christmas. In fact, June 25 is now called LEON Day! (LEON is NOEL spelled backwards and is the halfway point between the last Christmas and the next one.) It started because around this time crafters usually start planning homemade gifts, ugly sweaters, and decorations for the winter holidays. Local radio stations even play Christmas music on Leon Day.

So what does this have to do with LED lights?

Many of us still use incandescent bulbs on traditional trees. They are beautiful and we often feel nostalgic about them. But it may be time to upgrade those lights to LED. Here are some numbers that may convince you.

There are two main types of LED lights used in strings of Christmas tree lights, the C9 bulb and the smaller mini-lights. The C9 bulbs are the size of the traditional Christmas lights we all grew up with. And we’re all familiar with “mini-lights.”

So let’s compare the cost of traditional incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs:

Estimated cost of electricity to light a six-foot tree for 12 hours a day for 40 days.

Estimated cost of buying and operating lights for 10 holiday seasons.

So over ten seasons, you can have the beautiful nostalgic look of C9 bulbs for about $17.99 compared to $122.19 for incandescent bulbs!

If that doesn’t convince you it’s time to upgrade your Christmas tree lights to LED then here are a few more fun facts:

  • LEDs are safer. They are much cooler than incandescent lights which reduces the risk of combustion or burnt fingers.
  • LEDs are sturdier. They are made with epoxy lenses, not glass, and are much more resistant to breakage.
  • LEDs are longer lasting. This is huge! You could be using the same LED strings 40 holiday seasons from now! Traditional incandescent bulbs are usually good for about 3 seasons.
  • LEDs are easier to install. You can connect up to 25 strings of LEDs, end-to-end, without overloading a wall socket.
