Electricity Rates in Connecticut Rising up to 25% in 2025

Residents and businesses in Connecticut will face higher electricity rates starting January 1st 2025 as United Illuminating’s (UI) and Connecticut Light & Power’s (CL&P) Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) approved rates kick in.

These increases reflect changing wholesale energy costs and broader grid adjustments and are as follows:

United Illuminating:

Residential Standard Service rate will increase by 14% from 11.9101¢/kWh to 13.5683¢/kWh.

GS Standard Service rate for businesses will see an 11% increase from 12.0647¢/kWh to 13.4284¢/kWh.

For customers under specific time-based rates, on-peak charges could reach as high as 16.1418¢/kWh for homes and 19.7429¢/kWh for businesses.

Connecticut Light & Power:

Residential Standard Service rate will jump nearly 25% from 8.995¢/kWh to 11.190¢/kWh.

The small commercial and industrial (Rate 30 & 35) Standard Service rate will see a 23% increase from 8.726¢/kWh to 10.710¢/kWh.

Time-of-use rates for businesses could climb even higher during peak hours.

What Eversource and United Illuminating customers can do today to mitigate these increases

As January approaches, the best thing customers can do is to take advantage of 3rd party suppliers. In fact, even Eversource is recommending customers find a supplier before January 1st when rates increase:

As winter approaches, Eversource is reminding customers they can take control of their energy costs by shopping for a third-party supplier before an expected supply rate increase that typically occurs at the beginning of each year. Roughly half of New England’s electricity is produced using natural gas, and seasonal demand for the fuel drives up the price power generators charge. Under state laws related to deregulated energy markets, Eversource is prohibited from generating electricity and is required to purchase power on behalf of customers who’re not enrolled with an alternate supplier. Those costs are passed on with no mark up or profit to the company. In anticipation of the higher cost of electricity, customers are encouraged to compare rates being offered by third-party suppliers”

January is just over a month away. This means you don’t have much time before the approved rate increases take effect. But if you shop today you can get a lower rate before then.

Remember it typically takes a full billing cycle for a new rate to take effect if you decide to switch, so don’t wait and pay more than you need to!
